What is a Business Administration Degree?
A business administration degree is designed to teach students a variety of skills to be utilized in the working world. Those who choose to pursue finance and business positions can benefit from a strong foundation in business ethics, accounting, finance, marketing and sales. Students usually specialize in one of these disciplines. Finance courses and classes help prepare students with the analytical and critical thing skills that create great business leaders. Through a business administration degree program, students are able to further specialize in one of two areas: accounting or marketing.
Accounting Positions
For students with a keen grasp of math and number crunching, a specialization in accounting is a popular area to specialize in. Accounting positions require a strong attention to detail and often require the ability to use bookkeeping software to record and analyze a company’s financial processes.
Accounting and bookkeeping positions exist in companies of all sizes. Accounting assistants, who have completed finance courses and have business degrees, fill a wide range of responsibilities in virtually every type of company in every industry across America. While responsibilities vary based on placement for accounting assistants, there are core accounting principles that are necessary for most jobs. Individuals who have completed finance courses and finance classes help manage: payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing and the general ledger or the company’s “books,” among many other accounting related operations.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics more than 2.1 million individuals in 2006 were employed as bookkeepers, accountants and auditing clerks (Source: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos144.htm#emply). Many of these individuals have completed finance courses and pursue business degrees to familiarize themselves with accounting practices used in the market.
Marketing Positions
Students can also choose to specialize in marketing through our Associate of Occupational Studies in Business Administration Program. Marketers help companies determine their target markets and help develop strategies to best communicate their brand to their audience. The American Marketing Association (AMA) defines marketing as: "Marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders." Successful marketing requires many different talents. Most organizations hire a whole team to successfully market a product or service. Marketing professionals are often afforded the opportunity to learn about advertising, public relations and branding through their job. Research plays an important role in every marketing department, so individuals who enjoy analyzing data and analyzing consumer trends often find marketing jobs very enjoyable. A business degree with a concentration on marketing will help prepare you to pursue a marketing position by providing you with the skills needed to perform your job.
